Industrial Interior Design Style Before And After Images Roswell, GA

Roswell, GA, Industrial Interior Design Style Project

This family room in Roswell, GA, needed a facelift and just a few pieces of furniture to complete a well-planned space for relaxation. They recently had the room painted and preferred to stay with the existing color, a subtle shade of white. A spacious two-seater sofa from Restoration Hardware was purchased the prior year, which set the tone for the style of relaxed modernism, built for laid-back lounging with a super relaxed silhouette. The coffee table was also preowned, rustic, distressed, and angular with a heavy metal base. It was easy to determine to which style this client was attracted to; Industrial Modern. Reminiscent of old abandoned industrial buildings, with lots of wood and metal accents, eliminating the need for detailing, keeping things clean and edgy.

From Traditional To Industrial Interior Design

Industrial interior design is easy to achieve in a space where the architecture accepts the style, but this home had traditional details a designer cannot ignore. These details included A mantle with fluted pilasters, traditional crown mouldings, and baseboards throughout the house. The client decided not to change too many of the elements to stay within the allotted budget. Incorporating these details became an essential but challenging task as we started looking for additional pieces of furniture and finishes. We introduced a classic, clean-lined chaise lounge with more formal flare than the relaxed sofa in the space. It had a dual purpose, lounging, as it was extremely comfortable, but also sitting and joining a conversation as it had an almost full-back with cushions on one side. The arrangement of seating also allowed for one more large piece, which was also important for comfortable TV viewing. We decided to stay consistent in style and bring in another Restoration Hardware chair and a half to parallel the existing sofa. This choice kept a simplistic approach to completing the conversation circle.

The family room was a two-story space, which proposes challenges in interior design as in most homes, the upper walls remain bare. Furniture seems to dwarf in two-story spaces unless we draw the eye upward and create a composition to encompass all. In open concept floor plan homes in Atlanta area homes, it is typical to see a central fireplace flanked with built-in bookshelves to fill a two-story wall. When the bookshelves are missing, we need to assess what the space will be used for and possibly provide more than just storage. This family places importance on doing homework together, so rather than sending their child to their room to complete schoolwork, they wanted an area set aside for the nightly grind. We placed a simple writing desk near the seating area, so parents are close by when questions are asked. To fill the void of built-in bookshelves, we ordered custom-made thick, distressed floating wood shelves and installed them close to the soaring ceiling. We then filled the shelves with photos of family and collected and newly purchased accessories to soften the industrial feel.

The dining room proposed a similar challenge with a traditional paneled wainscot and crown mouldings. We again wanted to incorporate industrial furniture, so we chose a rustic sideboard with slate and metal elements to hold serving pieces but purchased a more traditional table with extra leaves and surrounding chairs. The paint colors often used for industrial designs are primarily darker to set a more somber, serious mood. The paint contrasted with the lighter tones of the table and chairs, which kept a careful balance between modern and traditional. We also used a mix of metals in this room, nostalgic of the design style. The client was an avid photographer. We hung one of his black and white pictures of San Francisco taken across the bay, a personal and flawless addition to our design. The setting is perfect for large gatherings with invigorating intellectual conversation and plentiful bottles of wine shared among family and friends. Cheers!
